Brand for a complex community

Riverside is a 100-acre mixed-use development nestled along the North Fork Holston River in Scott County, Virginia , a mountainous, riverfront setting near the Virginia-Tennessee line. The developer had an ambitious vision: a multi-generational community encompassing everything from upscale private villas and lakefront condos to workforce housing, independent and assisted living, memory care, retail, dining, and a riverwalk. The creative challenge was building a brand that could hold all of that together and one that felt equally at home for a million-dollar villa buyer and a young family renting workforce housing.

Before a single logo was drawn, we did the strategic work of defining what Riverside needed to feel like. The brand had to balance the natural beauty of the Appalachian setting with a sense of destination and aspiration. Welcoming without being generic, refined without feeling exclusive. We explored naming directions rooted in the region's heritage, state symbols, and natural landscape before landing on a visual identity that captures the warmth of the river and mountains without leaning into tired rustic tropes.

The result was a comprehensive visual identity system built to scale. The master brand anchors the entire development with a cohesive look and feel, while a flexible sub-brand architecture allows individual components (the lakefront villas, walking trails, senior living communities, and more) to carry their own distinct names and identities while still reading as part of the same family. Typography, color, logo marks, and graphic language were all developed to work across every touchpoint, from roadside signage to digital platforms.

This was branding work in the truest sense, not just a logo, but a strategic foundation that gives a major real estate development a clear identity, a consistent voice, and the creative infrastructure to grow into a destination that genuinely changes the character of the region it calls home.
